Sound Familiar?

You are a new parent with a sweet and very precious 2 month old. It’s now 4 am and your little one has been awake on and off since 11 pm. This has been going on for weeks and you are getting desperate for some consolidated sleep. Between caring for you newborn, older child, the house and yourself, it’s just not happening. You love you sweet pea, but your body is running on “E”. The Effects of Sleep Deprivation

Some sleep derivation comes with the territory of having a newborn. An infant needs to eat in the first weeks of life regularly, around the clock, about every 2.5-3 hours. However, prolonged sleep deprivation is a health condition that deserves serious attention. The ramifications having potential long term debilitating effects.

In an adult, sleep deprivation may lead to many conditions. They include but aren’t limited to:

  • Fatigue
  • Hallucinations
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Mood changes
  • Memory problems
  • Paranoia
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Impaired performance
  • Sleep cycle disruptions
  • Increased pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Cancer
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Accidents (car, work)
  • Decreased alertness
  • Decreased immunity
  • Irritability
  • Increased cortisol
  • Decreased leptin (appetite reducing hormone)
  • Increased gherlin (appetite increasing hormone)
  • Decreased judgement ability


Sleep deprivation in an infant may cause:

  • More frequent night wakings
  • Broken naps
  • Fussiness
  • Colic
  • Gaze aversion (won’t look at you)
  • Feeding issues
  • Eye rubbing
  • Inability to stay awake for adequate amounts of time
  • Constant need to be held
  • Inadequate REM sleep
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Long term sleep issues (inability to nap, continued frequent night wakings into the toddler years)
  • In appropriate food associations that can lead to excessive weight gain
  • Decreased fine motor skills

Remember, adequate sleep is CRUCIAL. It is not necessary to struggle and “suck it up” for weeks and months on end. Your child can sleep 10-12 hours per night and so can you!
