What To Look For When Hiring An Overnight Newborn Care Nanny?

A night nurse, Newborn Care Specialist, or newborn night nanny is a professional who helps with the overnight care of a newborn baby(ies) within the family’s home, specifically during the first few crucial weeks and months of a baby’s life. This is a profession that requires many areas of expertise, including newborn care, sleep training, breastfeeding and lactation, and so much more. These professionals are required to wear many hats and can help a family with so many crucial things during the first few nights and weeks of a baby’s life. Let’s explore some of the things that you may want to consider when hiring a Newborn Care Specialist or night nanny for your family.

Qualifications: What Should They Be Prepared To Handle?

Not all Newborn Care Specialists are created equal. An excellent night nanny should have a wide range of qualifications and be able to handle just about everything that your newborn can throw at them. Here are some things that you should ask about when interviewing your next overnight Newborn Care Specialist.

  • What medical training and/or certifications do they have?
  • Are they CPR certified, especially for newborns?
  • What is their experience with lactation help, especially in areas of consultation?
  • Do they have experience with sleep conditioning or establishing healthy sleep foundations from birth?
  • Are they trained in first aid, especially as it pertains to infants?
  • What is their educational background?
  • Can they provide references?
  • What is their preferred method for soothing a baby that is seemingly inconsolable?
  • What are their approaches to helping with things like colic, rashes, and other minor newborn related issues?
  • Are they experienced in helping with multiples or with premature newborns?
  • What is their work or professional background? Did they start as a nurse or other medically adjacent professional or did they jump right into the Newborn Care Specialist occupation?
  • Bonus question to ask yourself: assess their personality and approach. Are they a right fit for your needs and expectations? Personality can be a huge factor in determining the best caregiver for your little one.
